Halloween Safety for Pets

Getting caught up in the child driven Halloween spirit?  Let’s not forget about the safety of our pets.

Some recommendations to keep our dogs healthy and happy throughout this spooky night:

Treats are for kids on this night, not dogs

All chocolate – especially dark or baking chocolate- is potentially fatal for dogs.

Xylitol is an artificial sweetener found in some candies that can also be harmful.

If you are concerned that your dog might have eaten something he shouldn’t have call your vet or contact the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 1-888-4264435.

Halloween plants like pumpkins and decorative corn can cause tummy upset for your animal if nibbled on.

Electrical cords and wires could cause cuts and burns, even life threatening electrical shock.

Candles in pumpkins can be easily knocked by our curious pets.  Exercise caution, keep that illuminated pumpkin out of reach of your pet or small children.

Pet Costumes can be fun to look at but if your dog is not happy being dressed up you could cause undue stress.

Checklist for dressing up dogs:

  • costume should not constrict animals movement, hearing or breathing
  • try out the costume before the big night and watch for allergic or other unnatural reactions
  • if your pet is distressed you should opt for another form of dressing up like a simple bandana
  • if the costume has any dangly or small pieces they could be chewed and choked on

Your animal will likely be frightened by the frankenstein and witch costumes, best to keep him in another room

ID for your pet is a must.  Halloween creates havoc and you want your dog returned safely if he becomes lost.
