New Study Finds Popular “Alpha Dog” Training

Techniques Can Cause More Harm Than Good

Aggression in dogs can make their people feel alienated from a normal social life.  Keeping your dog healthy with regular walks can be difficult if there is no respect.

Respect is achieved through understanding.  We all have needs, even our dogs.

If your dog won’t do something you want him to do

  • consider what you are asking and if it’s even possible
  • look at the situation from your dogs point of view
  • assess what your dog is feeling and why
  • evaluate your own emotional/mental state
  • be willing to alter your technique accordingly

All dogs, like people, are individuals.  Unlike people they spend 80% of their life observing what is going on around them.  If stimuli is limited then so will be their capacity for accepting change.

If your dog is introduced to a situation that has an unfamiliar vibe – energy force – he will react based on experiences that he has already had.

As the handler, it is in your power to influence positive reactions.  It starts with expectations.

  • Expect your dog to follow you while on leash
  • Expect attentiveness, demand if necessary
  • Expect and demand response to “no” command
