Dog exercise is an important part of dog obedience training . Dog walking is an important part of exercise, it strengthens the bond you share with your dog.
A change of scenery coupled with some mental stimulation will help eliminate any issues you may have with dog behavior.
Today my daughter and I went to the park with the dogs. Before allowing them to run free we walked the leashed dogs around the perimeter of the area we wanted to keep them contained.
Once their boundaries were set and their leashes removed the great danes and boxer ran.
I was reminded of watching Thoroughbred horses stretching out. Straight back, long strides, outstretched neck…
They ran and jumped and played until they could go no more. They all panted and were thirsty so we hiked down to the river. I thought the layer of ice on the edge of the water would deter the dogs from entering the water.
Nope.
Each dog took a turn splashing around in the water for the first time this year. I had so much fun watching the dogs that I paid no attention to Pepsi, the boxer, rolling obsessively in the smooth rocks of the riverbed.
Immediately after noticing her behavior I cringed at the thought of driving home with her in the vehicle. She found an expired fish and it seems that dogs are to dead animal scent as upper class ladies are to quality perfumes.
Happy Note: Pepsi (boxer) is easier to bathe than Torque and Molson (great danes).
Not everybody has the opportunity to exercise their dogs in the same outdoorsy way.
Here is an alternative if you can’t get out, an exercise wheel for dogs.
