Dog Behavior

Great Dane Dog

Down at the river with a friend and our dogs – two Great Dane Dogs and a Boxer.

All three of the dogs were off leash, free to roam wherever they wanted. Something happened that caused me to run up to the road very suddenly.

I wasn`t sure how my great danes dogs Torque and Molson – who had been standing near me – would respond to my actions.

If they had started to run with me I would have faced the palm of my hand towards them and said wait.

The ground did not shake behind me so I carried on without a second thought.

It ended up that I travelled around the entire end of the bridge making a full circle around to my friend.

I could see that the dogs were right where I had left them.

My friend was in awe. He described the scene from his vantage point.

You took off and they both stood at attention, they were statuesque. They stared in that direction until they heard you coming under the bridge. They turned in that direction and waited for you. Amazing.

While I appreciate the acknowledgement of well-behaved dogs I think `amazing` might be a bit of a stretch. Proper behaviour in dogs is not something to be wished for, it is something to be expected. If you have the patience to follow through with every command you give your dog and the flexibility to accept that not all dogs are the same you will have success.
